The Bangor Erris Trail - 3 & 4 July 2021
This is a two day hiking and wild camp
We meet at the Brogan Carroll bothy at Letterkeen Wood, 12km from the town of Newport. We will be following the traditional trail into Ireland’s wilderness & dark sky reserve in Ballycroy National Park, The trail was traditionally used as the main road from Bangor Erris to Newport.
This hike requires a good level of fitness. The terrain ranges from rough mountain terrain, very wet bog, boardwalk and trail, not to be underestimated.
The total distance of this hike is 24km and a height ascent of 1200 approx.
What you need to bring?
- Waterproof walking boots with good ankle support
- Waterproof Jacket & trousers (The Irish weather can be very unpredictable!)
- Comfortable clothes to walk in
- Warm layer
- Lunch & Snacks
- 1.5-2lts of water
- Comfortable rucksack
- Any medication needed e.g. Inhaler
Food - You will need to carry snacks and water for 20 hours in the hills.
- 2 x Lunch (Saturday & Sunday)
- 1 x Dinner (Saturday)
- 1 x Breakfast (Sunday)
- Additional water
Overnight - We will be camping out on the Saturday night so you will also need to carry the following:
- Sleeping Bag
- Sleeping Mat
- Stove, pot and cutlery
- Insect Repellent
* please note the above are for meals when out on the hill.

Cover approx 16-18km on Saturday
Up and packed ready to walking by around 0930
Finishing the hike by around 1300
*This is an end to end walk, shuttles will be required (masks must be worn)
